Scope and Contents

A class term paper on The Battle of Kirksville and the Battle of Vassar Hill which Kent Bergstrand wrote and submitted to Dr. David March, Professor of History on October 17, 1975. The paper is 79 pages of text, maps and photographs relating to the two battles and associated events and people. The color photographs are of Kirksville, Vassar Hill and other Adair County sites connected with the battles as they appeared at the time the paper was written in 1975.

Joseph Darrow's 1812-1825 account book and 1847 court summons, as well as an 1864 Civil War diary, militia accounts book and post war County Collector's ledger maintained by his grandson, Lt. Edwin Darrow. Typed transcripts of Joseph's account book and Edwin's diary accompany the originals, but it is unknown who completed them or when they were added to the collection.

Scope and Contents Eighty-one documents from the Mead and Chandler family. The majority of the documents are handwritten letters, but there are also postmarked envelopes, indentures, payment records, marriage certificates, telegraphs, envelopes, poetry, photographs, and newspaper clippings spanning from 1824-1968. Personal military and pension records and documents created by John M. Davis as Company Commander, Company H, 63rd Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Bi-monthly muster rolls contain enrollment, discharge, promotions and other status changes for all company members December 1861 through December 1863.

Scope and Contents Civil War diary of Lewis A. Willard, who settled in Kirksville, Missouri, and scrapbooks about his son Arthur Lee Willard, a Vice Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Lewis' daughter and Arthur's half sister, Louise Willard, was married to P.O.
